Opry Night: Karen MacKay & Juanita Fireball & The Continental Drifters [ back ] This year’s Opry Night features back-to-back acts steeped in the traditional music of Appalachia. Sharing the stage will be “West Virginia Woman” Karen MacKay and Juanita Fireball & The Continental Drifters. Intertwined with her playing of traditional old time melodies, her own original songs and early country music, McKay tells stories about life and the songs she plays. Her gift and talent as a story teller was recently recognized when she took first place at the 2007 Vandalia Gathering's Liars Contest in Charleston. Juanita Fireball & The Continental strives to recreate the sound a listener may have heard on the radio in the 1920s and 30s, before the advent of television. This old-time West Virginia band was inspired by the “Lexington (Virginia) style” of music, taught to many young musicians in the 1970s by Odell McGuire; the sounds of the late, legendary Tommy Jarrell of North Carolina; and the breakdown music commonly heard at square dances throughout Appalachia.
