Experience the beauty and magic of winter when it comes alive at Snowshoe Mountain and in the Allegheny Mountains and the Monongahela National Forest. 

Winter brings new meaning to vacationing in Pocahontas County.  The cold powdery white stuff provides a new perspective to the beauty of the area and the playful things we enjoy.

Each winter, people make their way to Snowshoe Mountain for the best downhill skiing and snowboarding in the East and to enjoy all of the recreational opportunities the popular resort provides.

Mother Nature sugar coats the mountain with 180” of fresh snow each year. Over fifty trails and 11,000 acres of backcountry provide endless adventure.

Adventure Guides can provide fun activities like snowmobiling, cross country skiing and snowshoeing.  But Snowshoe Mountain is only one of our fun winter adventures.  For some, the snow covered road less traveled can be quite enjoyable as well.

Monongahela National Forest
In winter, the Monongahela National Forest is enchanting as ever.  It becomes a virtual wonderland for snowshoeing and winter hiking.

Miles and miles of trails and unplowed forest roads change character when coated with snow and become a stage for special winter outings.  Winter recreation opportunities can be found near every community and are easily accessible to the major highways that cross the mountains.

• A few popular choices include these areas:
       The beautiful and scenic Highland Scenic Highway, the highest major roadway in West Virginia, is unplowed in winter and offers a great cross-country skiing experience.
       The Shavers Fork Area which includes FR 92 (on Cheat Mountain north of US Highway 250) and FR 47 (off of FR 92).
       The Old Spruce Area on Cheat Mountain south of US Highway 250
       The Cranberry Backcountry Area offers trails and Forest Service Roads ranging from the easier, gentle rolling trails to the more difficult, steeper slopes.

Elk River Touring Center
