Public Art in Pocahontas County

Whether you’re out for a scenic drive or heading to your next trailhead, our local public art adds plenty of worthwhile stops to your trip.

Visit Seven Murals

Our area has seven vibrant murals, each telling its own story and drawing inspiration from Pocahontas County and West Virginia’s history, people and landscapes. Created through collaboration between local and national artists and community members, these works are deeply connected to the places they represent.

In Marlinton and Durbin, you’ll find murals that depict everything from early heritage to outdoor adventures.

Find Eight Trout Sculptures

In addition to murals, Pocahontas County is home to eight six-foot-tall fiberglass trout sculptures. Installed in 2021 to mark the county’s bicentennial, these pieces celebrate the eight rivers that begin here, earning the area its nickname, the Birthplace of Rivers.

Each sculpture was painted by a different artist, inspired by one of the county’s headwater rivers: the Cherry, Cranberry, Elk, Gauley, Greenbrier, Tygart Valley, Williams River and Shavers Fork of the Cheat River.

You can find these colorful trout in Marlinton, Hillsboro, Green Bank, Durbin and Snowshoe.
