13 Cultural and Agritourism Events To Experience In Pocahontas County

Warm weather brings the perfect opportunity to reconnect with the land, traditions and culture of Pocahontas County, West Virginia. From mountain music and local art to herbal workshops and historic celebrations, these upcoming cultural and agritourism events offer something for every age and interest. 


Cass History Tour 

Location: Cass Scenic Railroad State Park 

Date: May 13 from 5 to 6 p.m. 

Throughout the season, Cass Scenic Railroad State Park offers a variety of interpretive, educational and recreational programs led by the seasonal park naturalist.

Join the Cass History Tour to explore the former Cass Mill site and learn about the town’s unique history.


Spring Wildflowers At Cass

Location: Cass Scenic Railroad State Park 

Date: May 14 from 5 to 6 p.m. 

Take a guided wildflower hike and discover native blooms throughout the area. Meet at the Cass Company Store before roaming through the park alongside the park naturalist. Those interested in an additional adventure can continue on to Back Allegheny Mountain for an overlook view of Green Bank.


Living Roots of Mountain Medicine

Location: Yew Mountain Center
Date: May 14 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Spend an evening learning about traditional and modern practices of working with plants for healing and wellness, rooted in Indigenous and Afrolachian traditions. Presented by Rene Reynolds, a licensed massage and bodywork therapist, and Ruby Daniels, herbalist and owner of Creasy Jane’s, this discussion highlights the connections between wellness, heritage and the natural world.


Fly Fishing Friday

Location: Cass Scenic Railroad State Park 

Date: May 15 at 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. 

Take advantage of Fly Fishing Friday with a free fly fishing lesson at the park. Learn casting basics, knot tying and how different flies are used on the water.


Kids To Parks Day

Location: Cass Scenic Railroad State Park
Date: May 16 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Cass Scenic Railroad State Park is celebrating Kids to Parks Day, a national event encouraging children to explore their local parks and connect with the outdoors. 

This hands-on program features a turkey trek led by the assistant superintendent, where kids will search for turkey tracks, feathers and scratching sites while learning fun facts about wild turkeys, turkey calling and conservation. Children can also enjoy games, activities and coloring sheets throughout the event. While designed with kids in mind, all ages are welcome to join the fun.


Marlinton Art Walk & Street Jubilee 

Location: Marlinton
Date: May 23 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. 

Spend the afternoon in downtown Marlinton enjoying art workshops, live demonstrations, sidewalk art and live music during the Marlinton Art Walk & Street Jubilee. Hosted by Handmade WV Market, this community celebration brings creativity and local talent to Marlinton’s main street.


Full Moon Hike At Cass

Location: Cass Scenic Railroad State Park
Date: May 31 from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. 

Take part in a Full Moon Hike to the Cass water tower, once the site of the historic Cass baseball field. During the hike, learn about the moon, constellations, nighttime wildlife and Cass history. All ages are welcome, and hikers are encouraged to bring water, bug spray and a flashlight with a red tint.


Huntersville Tradition Education Day

Location: Huntersville
Date: June 4 

Part of the Cal Price Appalachian Enrichment Series, Huntersville Tradition Education Day highlights the heritage of one of Pocahontas County’s earliest communities, established in 1821 and once the county seat. The event offers a look into Appalachian history through music, storytelling and hands-on demonstrations.

Tour historic sites including the Huntersville School, Jail, Museum, Presbyterian Church, County Clerk’s Office and Civil War Cemetery. Demonstrations include quilting, blacksmithing, spinning, broom making, canning and other traditional Appalachian skills.


National Trails Day Hike

Location: Seneca State Forest and Cass Scenic Railroad State Park
Date: June 6 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. 

Join the Cass park naturalist to celebrate National Trails Day with a hike on the Rich Patch Loop Trail at Seneca State Forest. This 3.2-mile moderate hike features challenging climbs, unique habitats, wildlife, wildflowers and an overlook view of Frost.

Later that evening, return to Cass for a history-focused hike exploring remnants of the Cass Mill and part of the Greenbrier River Trail.

Cass Days

Location: Cass Scenic Railroad State Park
Date: June 20-21

The historic town of Cass celebrates its annual Cass Days with a weekend filled with art, culture, history and community. Festivities include a street fair, live entertainment, the Cass Days square dance and more.

One of the weekend’s highlights is the historic Parade of Steam on June 20, presented by Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad. This unique event offers an up-close look at the legendary steam locomotives of Cass. Admission is free, with staging beginning at the Cass Depot at 10 a.m., and the parade starting at 10:30 a.m.

Following the parade, a special excursion to Whittaker Station departs at 2 p.m. Be sure to reserve tickets in advance, as this excursion typically sells out early.


Mountain Medicine Weekend

Location: Yew Mountain Center
Date: July 10-12

From forest-farmed botanicals and field-grown herbs to medicinal mushrooms, Mountain Medicine Weekend focuses on the biodiversity and healing traditions of Appalachia.

Throughout the weekend, take part in workshops, guided walks, presentations, live music and shared meals. The event highlights both traditional and modern uses of wild plants and fungi, along with sustainable harvesting practices and hands-on preparation of tinctures, teas and salves. It also explores how forest farming helps preserve native Appalachian resources.


Mushroom Weekend

Location: Yew Mountain Center
Date: July 17-19

Join expert mushroom hunters for a hands-on, multi-sensory lesson on fungi in Appalachia. This immersive weekend offers guided learning experiences focused on identifying and appreciating the region’s diverse mushrooms.

Whether you’re an experienced forager or just beginning to explore, Mushroom Weekend offers a range of activities for everyone to enjoy.


Nettlefest 

Location: High Rocks
Date: August 2

Experience authentic Appalachian culture at Nettlefest, part of the Cal Price Appalachian Enrichment Series. Set against the scenic backdrop of High Rocks, this lively event features traditional music, square dancing, local food and family-friendly activities that showcase the traditions of the region.
