Trip Overview: The Greenbrier Express
The Greenbrier Express begins its captivating excursion from the historic town of Cass. Meandering alongside the pristine, free-flowing Greenbrier River, this train winds its way to the quaint mountain town of Durbin. The picturesque landscapes along the way are nothing short of breathtaking, as the train passes through a secluded wilderness nestled within the vast expanse of the Monongahela National Forest.
Upon arrival in Durbin, passengers are treated to a special lunch experience. All ticket holders get a standard cold cut lunch, served cafeteria-style, and accompanied by a bag of chips, a cookie and a bottle of water. While you eat your lunch, take a moment to soak in the serene ambiance and the scenic beauty of Durbin and its peaceful surroundings.
Keep your eyes peeled during the ride, and you might be able to spot some of the local wildlife. The area offers opportunities to see deer, river otters and even black bears. Bird enthusiasts will be pleased by the numerous species of eagles, hawks, ospreys and other aquatic birds that grace the skies above the river.
A Journey Through Time
The origins of the Greenbrier Line date back to 1902 when the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway constructed a 95-mile section with the primary aim of developing timber resources. For decades, it served its purpose faithfully, but as rail traffic declined, a significant portion of the line was eventually abandoned in 1978. However, the West Virginia State Rail Authority stepped in and acquired the northernmost 15-mile segment, setting the stage for its revival.
Unfortunately, a catastrophic flood in 1985 ravaged substantial sections of the line. It was through the collaborative efforts of the West Virginia State Rail Authority and Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad that the track was reconstructed, giving rise to a fresh and exciting option for visitors at the iconic Cass Scenic Railroad State Park.
