7 Pocahontas County Events To Attend in the Cal Price Appalachian Enrichment Series

Rooted in Appalachian culture, Pocahontas County, West Virginia, is a place where mountain music, traditional crafts and community gatherings continue to preserve local heritage. From artisan galleries to live music echoing through historic venues, every creation and performance tells a story of who we are.

For those looking to do more than just observe, the Cal Price Appalachian Enrichment Series offers hands-on programs that highlight the county’s artistic and cultural traditions. This series includes events, such as guided tours, demonstrations, workshops, interpretive programs and live performances that bring the spirit of Pocahontas County to life.

Here’s a look at the summer and fall events in the 2025 Cal Price Appalachian Enrichment Series.


1. Farm Crawl at Handmade WV Market – July 5-6

Take a guided tour of the Handmade WV Market’s newly established urban garden located behind the store and learn how to grow chemical-free produce in small spaces. While you’re there, Sandra Simmons, owner of Little Bee Farm in Hillsboro, will be sharing the basics of beekeeping. End your day with a hands-on flower arranging activity with Adrienne Cedarleaf and make your own floral creation to take home. The Farm Crawl runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both July 5 and 6.


2. Mountain Medicine Weekend at Yew Mountain Center – July 12-13

From forest-farmed botanicals to field-grown herbs and medicinal mushrooms, this two-day event at Yew Mountain Center explores the wide-ranging traditions tied to the biodiversity of Appalachia. Mountain Medicine Weekend includes interactive workshops, guided walks, engaging presentations, live music and delicious meals. Speakers include Jon Lamastra, who will share knowledge on medicinal mushrooms; Ruby Daniels, who will speak on Afrolachian traditions of mountain medicine; and Susan Leopold, who will deliver a keynote talk on the lost history of eclectic medicine and early American mountain doctors. 3. Mushroom Foray at Yew Mountain Center – July 19-20

Follow the expert mushroom hunters at Yew Mountain Center as they lead participants on a mushroom foray through the forest. Along the way, learn to identify and appreciate the wide range of fungi growing in the region. Back at the Yew Mountain Lodge, sort through the day’s finds and — if you’re feeling adventurous and have signed the waiver — sample a few safe, sautéed species. 4. Art in the Alley at Handmade WV Market – August 1 and September 5

Join the fun during the remaining First Friday celebrations at Discovery Junction in Marlinton, taking place August 1 and September 5. While you’re there, stop by Art in the Alley at Handmade WV Market, where local artisans will guide you through a hands-on craft activity. These evenings also offer a chance to enjoy local food, browse art displays, shop at downtown stores and listen to live music. 


5. Cranberry Shindig at Cranberry Mountain Center – September 28

Celebrate Appalachian culture at the Cranberry Shindig, a beloved annual event held at the Cranberry Mountain Nature Center. Set against the stunning backdrop of fall color, this one-day celebration includes traditional artisans, live demonstrations of blacksmithing and clogging, old-time and bluegrass music, and a wide range of food and craft vendors. Find everything from handcrafted goods and woodworking to maple syrup, apple cider, jellies, fudge and more.


6. Huntersville Education Day in Huntersville – October 2

Step back in time to the year 1821 and get a glimpse of what life was like when Pocahontas County was first formed. Huntersville Education Day includes tours of the historic Huntersville School, Huntersville Jail and the Civil War Cemetery. Demonstrators will showcase traditional skills like quilting, basket weaving, spinning, broom making and muzzle loading. After a full day of learning, stick around for a barbecue dinner and an evening of old-time country music.


7. Eight Rivers Quilting Party at the Pocahontas County Wellness Center – October 16-18

Quilting has long been a part of Appalachian life, not only as a craft but as a form of storytelling. Today, that tradition continues in Pocahontas County through quilting guilds and friendly quilting parties. The Eight Rivers Quilting Party features three days of quilting classes. Each day offers a different class focusing on hand sewing and a variety of quilting techniques. Whether you’re experienced or just getting started, this event offers the chance to connect with others and build your skills.
