New Year, New Adventures: 6 Things To Do In 2026 In Pocahontas County

With a new year comes a chance to try something new. In Pocahontas County, West Virginia, that might mean a different trail, a new tradition or a fresh way to experience a familiar place. Here are six activities to add to your 2026 plans.

1. Ride New Routes

Whether you’re a casual rider or a dedicated cyclist, there’s always a new trail to discover in Pocahontas County. In 2026, take on one of the gravel biking loops featured in the newly launched Mon Forest Towns: Gravel initiative by the Mon Forest Towns Partnership.

Gravel biking has grown in popularity nationwide, and this region is perfectly suited for it. With nearly a million acres in the Monongahela National Forest, more than a dozen state parks and forests, over 1,600 miles of forest roads and sweeping mountain views, the biking possibilities are endless here. These routes connect small towns throughout the national forest and include options for day rides, multi-day adventures and a bikepacking loop.

2. Learn The Art Of Fly Fishing

With the headwaters of eight rivers, Pocahontas County proudly carries the nickname “Birthplace of Rivers.” With that distinction comes an abundance of trusted fishing holes. Make this the year you try fly fishing!

Easy access and well-stocked streams make the area a favorite among anglers. The Cranberry, Elk and Williams rivers rank among the region’s top spots, while the Greenbrier River offers quiet stretches and a healthy trout population. Book a lesson with Knapps Creek Trout Lodge or Elk River Inn to learn the fundamentals of this classic mountain pastime from experienced guides. As a bonus, after your lesson, enjoy a cozy stay in the lodge or inn.

3. Immerse Yourself In Appalachian Culture

Pocahontas County is deeply rooted in Appalachian culture, with mountain music, traditional crafts and community gatherings helping to preserve local heritage. From artisan galleries to live music filling historic spaces, each experience tells a story.

For visitors who want to take part, the Cal Price Appalachian Enrichment Series offers hands-on programs that celebrate the county’s artistic and cultural traditions. Guided tours, demonstrations, workshops, interpretive programs and live performances provide meaningful ways to connect with the spirit of Pocahontas County. Check our calendar for upcoming events in the series.

4. Ride And Refuel

Rent, ride and refuel in Pocahontas County! Visit Greenbrier Bikes for a rental, then hit the trails in Marlinton. Whether you cruise along the Greenbrier River Trail or take on the rugged singletrack of the Monday Lick Trail System, you’ll be in need of a post-adventure meal afterward. When returning your bike, stop by Trailhead Pizza Co., located inside Greenbrier Bikes. This new favorite will satisfy everyone’s appetite with whole pies, slices, wings and more.

5. Make A Splash

When summer arrives, cool off at the Green Bank Observatory pool. Open to the public seasonally, the pool sits within the National Radio Quiet Zone, offering a peaceful place to unwind and enjoy the sunshine. Before or after your swim, take a tour of the grounds and get an up-close view of the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope (GBT), the world’s largest fully steerable radio telescope!

6. Tap Into Tradition

Celebrate one of the sweetest traditions of the season during Mountain State Maple Days. Join local farmers on February 21 and March 21 to tour sugar camps and learn more about maple production in Nature’s Mountain Playground. During this annual event, family farms across the county welcome visitors for tours, tastings and hands-on experiences, while local restaurants feature maple syrup–inspired menus.
