3 Ways To Spend A February Weekend In Pocahontas County

Whether you’re planning an adventure-filled weekend, a quiet mountain getaway or a family trip, Pocahontas County, West Virginia, provides the perfect winter escape. Here are three ways to spend a February weekend in Nature’s Mountain Playground.

A Winter Weekend For Adventurers

Pocahontas County is home to Snowshoe Mountain Resort, the Mid-Atlantic’s premier destination for winter recreation. Sitting at an elevation of 4,848 feet, Snowshoe features more than 60 skiing and snowboarding trails for every skill level — from easy beginner runs to expert challenges. Freestyle riders can test their skills in five terrain parks, and night skiing adds a memorable after-dark experience on the slopes.

For extra fun — especially for families — visit Snowshoe’s Coca-Cola Tubing Park. The six-story, eight-lane hill delivers fast-paced excitement for all ages. You can also book a guided snowmobile tour through remote backcountry trails for vast views and beautiful forest scenery.

Round out your weekend by exploring beyond the resort. Snowshoe or cross-country ski through peaceful, snow-covered forests along the Highland Scenic Highway. Please note: The highway is not maintained during winter. Plan to park at the northern access point off Route 219 North or the southern access off Route 39 West across from the Cranberry Mountain Nature Center.

The gentle grades of the Greenbrier River Trail and West Fork Trail are well-suited for relaxed snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. For a deeper backcountry adventure, explore the Cranberry Glades Wilderness Area within the Monongahela National Forest.

A Peaceful Winter Getaway

If a restful mountain weekend sounds like your kind of getaway, Pocahontas County has plenty of options. Start your day with a winter hike through snow-dusted landscapes. Our local state parks offer a range of experiences, from the wide-open views atop the lookout tower at Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park to serene wooded trails at Watoga State Park. Calvin Price State Forest and Seneca State Forest are also ideal for quiet, low-traffic hikes.

For a one-of-a-kind stop, walk the half-mile boardwalk through the Cranberry Glades Botanical Area. The frozen bog landscape creates a striking winter setting, and you may spot wildlife such as white-tailed deer, rabbits and beavers along the way.

After a day outdoors, warm up in our welcoming mountain towns. Browse local shops for handmade goods and souvenirs, and recharge with seasonal dishes and authentic flavors at restaurants throughout the area.

An Arts and Culture Trip

Plan a winter weekend around local traditions and community events. Mountain State Maple Days returns February 21 and March 21, inviting visitors to experience how maple syrup is made across Pocahontas County. During this annual celebration, family farms open for tours, tastings and hands-on demonstrations.

Many local restaurants join in with maple-inspired specials, from pancake breakfasts to specialty drinks and fresh-baked treats. Lodging specials at nearby accommodations make it easy to build a full weekend around the event.

For live entertainment, check the schedule at the Pocahontas County Opera House. A long-standing arts venue in the region, the Opera House hosts performances by local and touring musicians, theater productions, square dances and more. You can also pair your cultural weekend with a winter event at Snowshoe Mountain Resort, where festivals and activities take place throughout the season at 4,848 feet.
