Come to Roam, Stay for the Rest

Come to roam. Explore hundreds of miles of hiking trails stretching through two state forests, five state parks and the Monongahela National Forest. But when you’re ready for the rest, slow down on peaceful rail trails, soak in the views at scenic overlooks and set up camp in untouched wilderness areas.

Allegheny Trail

Lace up your hiking boots and tackle West Virginia’s longest hiking trail — the Allegheny Trail (ALT). Created in 1974 and maintained by the West Virginia Scenic Trails Association, this 311-mile route stretches from the Mason-Dixon Line on the Pennsylvania border to its southern point at Peters Mountain on the Virginia border, where it meets the Appalachian Trail. Pocahontas County is proud to be home to an 86-mile stretch of this iconic trail, winding through Durbin, Marlinton, Cass, Seneca State Forest, Calvin Price State Forest, a portion of Watoga State Park and even along the ridge of the Green Bank Observatory.
