Position Title: SHARC and Trail Maintenance Coordinator
The Snowshoe Highlands Ride Center in Pocahontas County is West Virginia’s first International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) designated Ride Center, Silver Level. The major stakeholders in the area, U.S. Forest Service, Pocahontas County Convention and Visitors Bureau, Snowshoe Mountain Resort, West Virginia State Parks and Forests, Pocahontas County Parks and Recreation, Pocahontas Trails, and other community organizations have recognized the need to coordinate efforts to achieve a gold level designation. Trail maintenance has been identified as a priority need to accomplish this goal.
This position will serve as the Snowshoe Highlands Area Recreation Collaborative (SHARC) Coordinator/ Trail Maintenance Manager and will use SHARC’s five-year strategic plan and the WV Snowshoe Highlands Ride Center Gap Analysis as a guide to achieve a gold-level designation. Now a top regional economic development priority, this designation will mark the Snowshoe Highlands Ride Center as one of the top seven mountain bike destinations in the world and will bring an additional $24.2 million per year and 304 new jobs to Pocahontas and neighboring counties by 2028.
This position will provide coordination between local stakeholders and those of the surrounding area to ensure efforts are not competing, that priority trail maintenance needs are being met, funding is well coordinated and managed, and that information is shared between local and regional stakeholders. Though initially started as a mountain biking initiative this role may include some opportunity to work with other recreation forms such as hiking, gravel biking, road biking, horseback riding, backpacking, and bike packing.
The position is appropriate for someone with 3-5 years of relevant professional experience, with a pay range of approximately $38-42,000, depending on experience. For someone with additional previous experience including supervising a full-time staff, a higher salary and additional responsibilities are possible. The position is full-time, year-round, with competitive benefits.
A. This position is responsible for:
- Prioritize and track trail maintenance needs and accomplishments including entering them into a geospatial database and the Forest Service database of record.
- Grant building and maintaining partnerships with local community members, businesses, and organizations
- Participating in a variety of stakeholder community meetings throughout the Snowshoe Highlands region. Networking with local stakeholders to learn about their projects and coordinate with various regional government, private and nonprofit entities for project planning
- Proposal and project management and preparation
- Identification of funding resources and opportunities. Position is fully funded for three years, and future expansion of this position will be a priority.
- Identifying a long-term maintenance and volunteer program for the ride center.
- Coordinating and facilitating the Snowshoe-Highlands Area Recreation Collaborative (SHARC) working group on a monthly basis and providing the status of projects, regional initiatives, upcoming opportunities, etc.
- Using a variety of communications tools to share information with the public regarding the Snowshoe Highlands Ride Center and its benefits
- Exercising sound fiscal management, as measured by completion of projects on budget and on schedule.
B. Duties include:
- Monitoring local, state, federal and private funding sources for opportunities to support trail maintenance and improvement
- Once identified and approved, preparation of grant applications / proposals to seek funding
- Monitoring and coordination with the surrounding area stakeholders for similar efforts
- Supervising the Trail Supervisor (and seasonal trail crews as needed) and assists in trail maintenance
- Maintenance and upgrade of signage throughout the ride center
- Participation in local stakeholder meetings and SHARC meetings
- Periodic monitoring and reporting to the stakeholders the status of applications, opportunities and progress on existing (funded) efforts
- Creating and presenting on project and program status to applicable audiences.
- Represents the SHARC at meetings with agency partners, land managers, partner organizations, concerned groups and the general public for the purpose of promoting the trail, exchanging information, coordinating interagency involvement, identifying project issues and/or constraints, and clarifying SHARC objectives.
- Other related duties as assigned.
C. Job Requirements:
- BS degree in outdoor recreation management or similar disciple or 5 years directly related experience,
- Demonstrated ability to plan and carry out complex projects, including delegating, prioritizing and problem-solving
- Experience training and providing oversight to staff and/or volunteers
- Experience selecting and working with contractors
- Able to work independently, show initiative, identify, and act on opportunities that are identified,
- Experience tracking and documenting trail maintenance needs and accomplishments
- Possess excellent speaking and presentation skills, comfortable with giving presentations to large and varied audiences
- Willingness to work outside/year-round, in all weather conditions
- Ability to walk long distances over rough terrain carrying 25lbs
- Intermediate or more advanced mountain biking ability
- Possess excellent computer skills in MS Word, Power Point, Excel, Outlook, and Adobe Acrobat. Proficient with use of social media – Facebook, Instagram, etc.
- Experience organizing and facilitating meetings
- State issued driver’s license
- 2+ years of experience in grant preparation, ideally with a recreational focus and website maintenance preferred

Position Title: Trail Maintenance Crew Lead

This position is intended to support and implement SHARC’s mission to “Enhance, Promote, and Develop Outdoor Recreation in the Snowshoe Highlands region” primarily through the maintenance and improvement of mountain biking trails and supporting recreational infrastructure to enhance the visitor experience. The Trail Crew Lead is a full-time position, working year-round, hiking or riding, up to 40 minutes to the job site carrying gear. Work consists of heavy manual labor with hand tools including clearing organic ground layer, trees, and brush, lifting and moving large rocks, and shoveling dirt. The result is backcountry singletrack trail that will draw people into the Snowshoe Highlands region to explore by foot and by mountain bike.
The Trail Maintenance Crew Lead will take direction from the SHARC Coordinator and SHARC working group and will supervise seasonal crew(s) and volunteers as a coordinated team to perform many challenging tasks. The Trail Crew Lead will ensure that safe work practices are followed by crew and volunteers and will be familiar with all regulations for each landowner. The Trail Crew Lead will be expected to exercise skills of delegation, prioritization and problem-solving, and to relate in a warm and welcoming way to the public.
The position is appropriate for someone with 2+ years of relevant professional experience, with a pay range of approximately $35-38,000, depending on experience. For someone with additional previous experience including supervising a full-time staff, a higher salary and additional responsibilities is possible. The position is full-time, year-round including occasional winter field work, with competitive benefits.
A. This position is responsible for:
- Ongoing maintenance of trails, trailheads, signage, vistas, and other trail-related recreation infrastructure
- Scouting, planning, and executing trail maintenance and new trail construction projects
- Hires, trains, and supervises seasonal trail crew staff on trail maintenance projects.
- Purchases (via Pocahontas County CVB procurement policy) and maintains trail building equipment and supplies
- Ensures trail maintenance projects stay within budget and documents expenditures according to PCCVB financial policy
- Work with the SHARC Coordinator on partner needs assessments, planning and coordination of work
- Interacts and communicates about the Snowshoe Highlands Ride Center, trail information, and riding opportunities with the public, both in informal encounters and, as appropriate, planned events such as hikes and presentations
B. Duties include:
- Assists in trail design, layout, and assessment to ensure that maintenance is completed to high standards and results in low long-term maintenance needs
- Collects data on trail maintenance needs and completed projects using GPS and enters data into a geospatial database and the Forest Service database of record
- Creates and provides training to seasonal crews and volunteers in trail standards, construction and maintenance, water management on trails, crew leadership, and tread enhancement
- Organizes and leads staff and volunteer work crews to perform trail maintenance and construction where needed
- Builds relationships with existing and potential partner groups and regional land managers
- Regular review of and maintenance of trail mapping apps and user generated trail information platforms such as but not limited to MTB Project and Trail Forks for accuracy of local trail systems
- Other duties as assigned
C. Job Requirements:
- BS degree in outdoor recreation management or similar disciple or 3 years directly related experience
- Expertise in sustainable trail design and construction, including:
- Water management on trails
- Trail layout and design
- Tread enhancement
- Construction of single-track trail systems for hikers and multiple uses, and
- Construction of stone and timber structures
- Demonstrated ability to hire, supervise, train, and manage a crew
- Demonstrated ability to plan and carry out complex projects, including delegating, prioritizing, and problem-solving
- Intermediate or more advanced mountain biking ability
- Proficiency in operation of chainsaws (will need to gain Forest Service certification upon acceptance of position, brush cutters, and small equipment
- Proficiency in off-trail navigation including use of GPS and map/compass
- Willingness to work outside/year-round, in all weather conditions
- Ability to walk long distances over rough terrain carrying 40lbs
- Experience selecting and working with contractors
- State issued driver’s license
- Proficiency in standard office software
- Supervisory experience is required
- Possess excellent speaking and presentation skills

The Pocahontas County Convention and Visitors Bureau is hiring two seasonal Information Specialist positions for the 2023 summer/fall season at the Durbin Visitor Center and Arts Center
Weekends are required; to be filled immediately and will be full time through October. Training will be provided.
