As the inklings of Autumn portend in Pocahontas County, there is one whole action-packed August, full of events to help ease those last month of summertime blues! From Appalachian arts & culture and food, to historical museum anniversary celebrations, to free kids bike races. This list is sure to appeal to the varied interests of visitors & locals alike!
First Friday at Discovery Junction
Friday, August 2nd from 5 to 7pm
With the theme of ‘A Taste of Pocahontas’, First Friday August edition will feature an evening of food, fun and entertainment with music by old-time string band Mud Hole Control. Fresh produce will be on site for purchase from members of the Pocahontas County Farmers Market, as well as food samples available.
Treasure on the Mountain
Saturday, August 3rd – All Day
Snowshoe’s eminently popular annual raffle party fundraiser, Treasure on the Mountain. Live, local musical entertainment, food and drinks, side raffles, and the chance to win $350,000 worth of cash & prizes. Local non-profit organizations provide the food and local musicians supply the entertainment.
Appalachian Heritage Day
Saturday, August 3rd – 10am to 5pm
Appalachian Heritage Day at Cass Scenic Railroad State Park celebrates Pocahontas County’s Appalachian heritage with a day of exhibits about the history and culture that make Appalachia unique. Pocahontas County Artisan Co-op will have member artists demonstrating their artwork on the Cass Company Store porch and in the parking lot at Leatherbark Ford Gallery.
West Virginia Hillfest
Friday, August 9th – Sunday, August 11th
The spirit of motorsport will climb to a new summit in West Virginia in August in Pocahontas County, namely Snowshoe. The WV Hillfest is a high-octane celebration of speed, skill, and thrill of a curvy time trail up one of West Virginia’s most iconic mountain roads. Attendees can expect competent competition, amazing car displays, food, and demanding drives through Pocahontas County’s incredible two-laned scenery.
GFWCWV – Pearl S. Buck Birthplace Museum 50th Anniversary F-U-N Raiser
Saturday, August 10th – 10am to 3pm
The General Federation of Women’s Clubs of WV will hold a fundraiser entitled Lemonade, Loot & Lunch for the Pearl S. Buck Birthplace Museum to celebrate its 50th Anniversary. To participate, bring an item for the Silent Auction. Tickets are $50 and can be purchased by calling the Pearl S. Buck Museum at 304-653-4430. SlatyFork Enduro
Saturday & Sunday, August 10th & 11th
Get back to the early 90’s and the trail that started it all on Mine Road in the SlaytFork Enduro with a full-tilt or leisurely loll through the Gauley Headwaters & Tea Creek trails. Practice on each stage for families and participants on Saturday. Pocahontas Trails volunteers will give guided tours and arrange shuttles for riders to view the race course. A complimentary social kids race will take place around the camping area Saturday evening. On Sunday at 9:30am the six-stage race will take place with winners determined by who accumulates the lowest combined times for each section. Riders and spectators will transit between timed sections making it a social event with riders’ families and friends encouraged to attend.
Snowshoe Community Appreciation Day
Saturday, August 11th – All Day
Free passes for local residents of Pocahontas, Randolph & Webster counties with access to Split Rock Pools, Shaver’s Lake activities, climbing wall, euro-bungy and scenic lift rides.
Watoga Art in the Park
Friday & Saturday, August 31st & September 1st
A Labor Day Weekend tradition at Watoga State Park, Watoga Art in the Park two day event celebrating local artisans of Pocahontas County. Participate in art workshops for all ages. Activities & games for kids as well as live music and local food vendors will be on site.
WV Enduro Series Final
Friday & Saturday, August 31st & September 1st
The WV Enduro Series returns to Snowshoe Mountain for its championship round featuring a mix of downhill, back-country single track and wide open park trails. The race will include pedal and lift assisted transfers in six to seven stages for the full enduro experience.
