Cross-Country Skiing & Snowshoeing

Extend your time here by exploring Pocahontas County’s breathtaking landscapes through cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Traverse the Highland Scenic Highway’s 23 miles of unplowed roadway for a picturesque journey to scenic vistas. However, it’s crucial to exercise caution, as the Highland Scenic Highway is not maintained during the winter. Park at the northern access point (off Route 219 N) or the southern access point (off Route 39 W, across from the Cranberry Mountain Nature Center) and embark on a seasonal expedition surrounded by the untouched beauty of Nature’s Mountain Playground.

The Greenbrier River Trail State Park is a winter haven spanning Hillsboro, Marlinton and Cass. This 78-mile pathway, known for its summer biking opportunities, transforms into a skier’s paradise once the snow blankets the landscape. With a gentle, less than one percent grade, the trail is ideal for leisurely snowshoeing or cross-country skiing. Another highlight for cross-country skiers and snowshoers is the West Fork Trail in Durbin. 

For the adventurous souls, visit Cranberry Wilderness for 100 miles of trails, rare plant and animal sightings, and a 20-mile ski loop. This expansive wilderness park is perfect for a cross-country skier, offering both leisurely trails and challenging routes for a complete winter cardio workout.

Lastly, Elk River Touring Center provides access to trails running through the mountains at 4,700 feet above sea level. With three miles of maintained pathways linking into over 15 miles of wild National Forest land, skiers of all skill levels can find their ideal route. The center offers equipment rentals and ski lessons, making it a welcoming destination for visitors of all ages looking to explore the snowy wonders of Pocahontas County.
